PRIVATE AIDS TO NAVIGATION

While ANY Auxiliarist can report any DISCREPANT aid, including discrepant PAToNs, Private Aids to Navigation can only be VERIFIED by a qualified Aid Verifier. To maintain one's AV qualification it is necessary for the individual to check and REPORT on three (3) PAToN each calendar year and attend the annual Operations Workshop. A refresher course must be taken every third year.
The accuracy of the verification of any light characteristics is crucial! Any lighted PAToN that is extinguished, dim, or obscured should be reported as a CRITICAL discrepancy to Sector Ohio Valley by radio or telephone.
Most often verification of PAToNs will require night ops so be sure to exercise special care while on patrol. Assign many lookouts and remind them of their task and its importance. Safety is the most important part of any mission!
